LAST ASSIGNMENT: Jim “Hambone” Hammond was appointed to the Indianapolis Fire Department on 6/2/1988. He first was a graduate of Scecina Memorial High School in 1982 and worked at Moore and Kirk funeral home during his 4 years of high school. After graduation, he worked as a Service Coordinator for Flanner and Buchanan Mortuaries from 1984 until starting IFD recruit school in 1988. He was also a limousine driver before starting the fire academy. During his time traveling around the city between firehouses, he was included in a group subs, that were given the name “The Crazy 8.” They consisted of firefighters that subbed around the city for many years, until Kelly Days were implemented in October 1996, that finally ended their years as departmental subs. Hambone chose to go regular on Ladder 14 A shift and began his assignment there on 10/7/1996. Hambone was known to be a reliable cooking partner, and was a huge Notre Dame football fan. He never transferred from his spot on Ladder 14 and retired on 8/19/2000. Jim continued to be a part of the funeral industry for many years on the Eastside of town in the Irvington area. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He truly was a compassionate guy, that adored helping others during difficult times and being with his own family as much as possible.
