LAST ASSIGNMENT: There really is no way to encapsulate Chief Walker’s 44 year career in a paragraph, so I won’t attempt to. I will touch on a few highlights. Doug was promoted to Lieutenant in 1954 and assigned to Truck 19. A few assignments later an assignment at Engine 6 kept him planted for 9 years, when he was assigned Aide to District 3 in 1966. Later that year Doug was promoted to Captain and assigned to Engine 8 for a short stint and on to Engine 3. In the late 60s, then Mayor Lugar appointed Doug as the first Public Relations and Personnel Director of the Indianapolis Fire Department, and Public Relations Chief. Doug transferred back to the companies as District Chief 5 and 6. Doug moved to District 2 Chief in 1982, where he would remain until his retirement in 1991. I haven’t even touched on Doug’s contribution to the department in his efforts with Local #416, establishing The Firefighters Credit Union and serving on the Board for 30 years, or his tireless work in the community on all levels. Doug was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash the state’s highest civilian honor in 1991. Doug and his late wife of 70 years, Joanna, started Walker Insurance Agency in 1960, where Doug was involved for 50 years. Suffice it to say, Doug had an amazingly full life. His presence will be felt for generations to come.
