LAST ASSIGNMENT: Mark Ackelmire was appointed to the Indianapolis Fire Department on 05/27/1968, after serving in The United States Navy from 1962-1966. He served as a boatswain’s mate on the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier assisting with navigation, and also attended The Navy’s firefighting school while in the service. Mark was assigned to Engine 08 for his first day on IFD. On 08/26/1970, he went regular on Engine 34. Several months later, he transferred to Snorkel 31 C shift on 06/10/1971. On 07/26/1971, Mark transferred to the Repair Department at the IFD shops. He was appointed to Jr. Grade Mechanic on 10/13/1971 while at the shops. But Mark decided to return to suppression and went to Truck 19 C shift on 05/18/1972. He stayed there until being promoted to Chauffeur and assigned to Squirt 13 B shift on 07/20/1977. Mark stayed there for 4 months, before transferring to drive Truck 30 B shift on 11/20/1977. Mark made his final transfer to drive Truck 10 B shift on 08/14/1982 until retiring on 01/04/2002. Mark spent his years after retirement fishing and relaxing around his lake home in Monrovia.
