The Indianapolis Fire Departments 80th recruit class took the oath to serve on Monday August 3, 2015. Thirty of the recruits in the class are headed for IFD while three additional members are headed to Beech Grove Fire Department. The recruits will be mentally and physically challenged over the course of 20 weeks with the anticipated date of graduation set for December 18, 2015. They will hit the streets as probationary firefighters on December 19th. Certifications will …include Firefighter 1 & 2, Emergency Medical Technician, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Ops with basics training in disciplines such as Flashover, High and Low Angle Rope Rescue and Extrication. Each week of instruction will bring them closer to earning the IFD patches worn on their uniform and will culminate in the presentation of their badges at graduation.
While most of IFD Class 80 hails from Indiana…specifically the Indianapolis area, some come to the IFD family from Ontario Canada, St. Petersburg Florida, Clarksville, TN, Allendale, MI and Lexington, KY. Several are legacies to the family tradition of firefighting or currently serve as a firefighter or police officer. Other former occupations include Biology Teacher, Intelligence Analyst, College Admissions Coordinator, Golf Pro, Lab Assistant, Nanny, Fed Ex Driver and Business Administrator just to name a few. 24 of the 30 IFD recruits are college graduates, 7 served in the military and the average age of the class is 29 years old.
The IFD recruits represent 27 men and 3 women out of 1838 applicants from the most recent IFD hiring process and are the first class off the list. Class 79 was hired in May 2014 and was 38 members strong.
