IFD District Update – July 20, 2015

[upme_private]There was a Labor Management last week and Chief Malone had his open forum. Below are some updates.

  •  Retired Chief Kimbrew:  As many of you know Retired Chief Kimbrew, Chief of IFD, passed away July 16th. He was the first “Firefighter of the Year” and  became the first Black Fire Chief of the Indianapolis Fire Department on January 19, 1987. Please keep the Kimbrew family in your thoughts and prayers.

 Visitation: Thursday July 23 6pm-9pm @ Stuart Mortuary 2201 N. Illinois.

 Service: Friday July 24 1pm @ New Wineskin Ministries 4501 W. 38th St.

  •  Promotion Process: The SME’s have met and have begun reviewing the test bank for the promotion exam. The written test is scheduled for August 6th and  August 7th. The Assessment Phase is scheduled for September 12th and 13th. The Chief plans to make promotions the first week of October
  •  The Merit Board approved making the promotion eligibility list good for 3 years or until a new eligibility list for the next process is final, whichever occurs sooner. This process will follow the current merit law with the only change being the list will only be good for 3 years. Good luck to all that are going through the process.
  • Officer Candidate School: The Dept. is finalizing the Officer Candidate School for the newly promoted officers. After the first group this will be a requirement prior to being promoted.
  • Hiring Process: 30 candidates have received their conditional offer. They all have met with PERF and will be starting recruit class August 3rd.
  • New L416 Website: Again the new website is up and running. The new site is very user friendly and can be used on your mobile devices. We are still currently adding information to it, so you may not be able to find everything on it just yet, but there is quite a bit on their now. For instance: upcoming events, the retirement presentation, pay stub abbreviations, and the MyClinic information is all currently on there. Again the new site can be used on your mobile devices. The address is still the same
  • New Public Safety Director:  Director Troy Riggs is stepping down as the Public Safety Director at the end of July. Dr. David Wantz has been named as the Interim Public Safety Director. He served 10 years on the Perry TWP Fire Dept Merit Board  and has served on the IMPD Merit Board.Along with this Deputy Director Valerie Washington has stepped down as the Deputy Director of Public Safety to take on a new role. Her replacement has yet to be named.
  • Building Project: The finance committee has met and finalized the proposal to go before the membership. We will have informational sessions July 21st at 1800 hrs before the General Meeting and July 22nd at the conclusion of the General Meeting.

There will be a Special Meeting at the Hall on August 18th at 0900 & 1800 hrs,  August 19th at 0900 and August 20th at 0900.

Voting will take place after the first Special Meeting on August 18th and will close at 1700 on August 20th. All voting must be done at the Union Hall. We have pictures of the proposed addition on the new web site. I can also come by your station and go more in depth on the project as well. Just give me a call.

  • PAC : The PAC committee has met with most of the candidates for CCC and with both Mayoral candidates. The Committee will give their recommendations of endorsement during the General meeting Tuesday July 21 @ 1900 and July 22 @ 0900. We are waiting to make a recommendation in the Mayoral race until both candidates meet with the Union Presidents Association in August.
  • Health and Safety Project Team: The Chief is starting a team to look at everything related to health and safety. This will include things such as: WPE, CPAT Worker’s Comp, Injuries, and Cancer risks and prevention. This is not a committee but rather a team that will have a set task to accomplish.
  • Fishing with a Firefighter: Its that time of year again where we need volunteers to help with this event. Please see the attached letter on this event.
  • Contract Negotiations: As stated in my earlier email I am soliciting ideas pertaining to the contract. We have been creative with our contracts in the past and we will need to continue to do so. If you have any ideas or if there is something you would like to see on the Contract Survey send me an email and let me know.
