The Phoenix Society has requested volunteers to assist with the upcoming World Burn Congress that will be held here in Indianapolis. The Congress will be held October 20-25, 2015, more than 900 burn survivors, their families, burn care professionals and firefighters will attend the Phoenix World Burn Congress held at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown (350 W Maryland St) to share their experiences with other survivors, increase their knowledge about recovery, and learn about support networks. During the four-day conference, sessions will cover topics ranging from social challenges such as dealing with anxiety and psychological pain after hospital discharge, a young adult program to help survivors ages 18-25 build confidence, fostering personal growth and enhancing communication skills. A special youth and family program for children from 7 to 17 years old will help family members learn how a burn injury impacts the overall family structure. Burn survivors can also attend a private creative cosmetics and color analysis consultation. In addition, survivors can gain knowledge about advocacy roles they can play to raise awareness about the need for quality care and burn prevention. A special Walk of Remembrance at 6 pm on Wednesday Oct. 21 is also planned to pay tribute to the over 3,240 lives lost to burn injury last year (NFPA). More information about the events will follow. It is hoped that a strong firefighter presence is made and that these survivors know we are all in this together.
Please consider being a part of this special event – help showcase the Local 416 Family and your department by volunteering a short amount of time to make an impact on our attendees – many of whom will visit Indianapolis for the first time. The following times are available and need to be filled. At both the Airport and the Hotel (Marriott downtown) your uniformed presence will be as a greeter and helper to those arriving and again when they leave. Many will need help with luggage.
A few things to know……
1. Volunteers could be asked to do a variety of things. Help with directions, reception desk assistance, help with luggage, help serve lunch…support with where ever there is a need.
2. Parking will be in the Indianapolis Indians Lot. A shuttle may be available.
3. Dress: Blue shirt badge – Class B. Firefighter presence always welcome.
4. Prior to volunteering please listen to the Phoenix Society Sensitivity Training video. It is approximately 20 minutes in length. http://www.phoenix-society.org/training/sensitivity/player.html
